A BIT ABOUT US
WHAT WE DO
Bayin is uniquely set up to bring a taste of Myanmar (formerly Burma in South East Asia) to your table. John & Katrina are the first importers of cold pressed, naturally produced Sesame and Peanut oil from Myanmar to Europe. This is just the beginning of the Bayin range of Myanmar food.
WHO WE ARE
John and Katrina have a passion for travel and food. They went backpacking on honeymoon to Myanmar (Burma) because John’s grandmother was Burmese, and it was one of the countries they had not been to in South East Asia. The trip proved inspirational. While trekking through the remote hills of the Shan State they encountered local Myanmar dishes cooked using sesame and peanut oil, and saw the abundance of crops grown naturally without the use of pesticides.
They passed many schools on their trek and witnessed the lack of resources – and the local children’s excitement at receiving the simple notepads and pencils that John and Katrina gave them.
An idea began to form: if they brought sesame and peanut oil from Myanmar to Europe, they could help the farmers sell their goods internationally whilst giving back to local schools in the form of resources.
OUR FRIENDS AND PARTNERS
YE KYAW ZIN (JOE) & JASMINE ZIN
At the end of their honeymoon and returning to Yangon, they met their friend, Ye Kyaw Zin(Joe) from Myanmar to say goodbye. They spoke about their journey and business intentions and Ye Kyaw Zin explained that his family are farmers from Myin Sine village in the Magway region. His family produces many different crops, including sesame and peanut oils and has been farming this land for generations.
A couple of phone calls later, Ye Kyaw Zin’s mother had some samples ready for John and Katrina to take back to Ireland. This was the first shipment of Bayin Sesame and Peanut oil!
THE STORY OF OUR
Bayin is dedicated to sourcing our products directly from the farmers who grow their crops naturally without use of pesticides to provide you with high quality ingredients for you and your family.
On our recent trip to Myin Sine we saw for ourselves just how labour intensive it is to grow these crops and all done by hand under the intense Myanmar sun. That is why a fair price to the farmers is so important to Bayin Foods.
Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) is situated in South East Asia neighbouring India, China, Bangladesh, Laos and Thailand. Ruled by Kings for most of the 19th century, the last king of Burma King Thibaw was exiled to India by Britain as they began to rule in 1885.
Burma gained independence in 1947. In 1962 a military coup took place and military rule presided for the next 50 years, and Burma became officially known as Myanmar in 1989. EU economic sanctions imposed during the years of military rule were suspended in 2012 due to new leadership in Myanmar, and a series of political, economic and administrative reforms.
The Myanmar people are gentle, generous, humorous and extremely welcoming. There is a story in John’s family that his grandmother was related to King Thibaw but this has not been confirmed.
